Also known as the Mexican Eagle, Mexican Buzzard, and Audubon's Caracara, this unusual falcon has striking long yellow legs, black body and cap, white neck, naked reddish facial skin (cere), and a blue-gray heavy, hooked beak. It is a large falcon about the size of an osprey. Unlike most falcons, their wings are broad, their flight is slow, and they often walk. They are one of the few raptors to hunt on foot, overturning objects or digging to find food such as fruit, insects, or eggs. Caracaras will steal other bird's prey, and frequently scavenge. This bird's range is the American tropics from the southern US border through Mexico and Cuba to Panama where they inhabit primarily open countryside. Caracaras will mate for life, generally laying 2-3 pinkish-brown eggs that incubate for 28-32 days.
